Elly Turns 2! August 30, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — Christine @ 6:17 pm

We started Elly’s birthday celebration by picking her up and bringing her to our beach front anniversary hotel for breakfast since we had spent the previous night there. It was a buffet ya’ll, something our good eater along with her parents can appreciate. Elly spent time playing at the beach and hotel pool then after nap we took her out for her favorite (soy) cheese pizza. After dinner she opened a few more presents and had more cake. She has come to love cake almost as much as I do. Daddy read her a sweet birthday bedtime story to finish up our great day of celebrating.

Here are some of our thoughts to Elly as she turned 2….

Dear Elly,

Happy 2nd birthday little surfer girl! This past year has been another one filled with learning and amazement. You’ve changed from a baby into a toddler right before our eyes!

Some of your greatest milestones have been learning to walk and talk. And boy, are you a talker! We feel so lucky that you are able to communicate with us as well as you can. You’ve learned lots of words, phrases and sentences and now you’re our little parrot, repeating pretty much everything you hear. You certainly aren’t afraid to voice your opinions and feelings!

You’re also a little girl with a big personality. You make us laugh all the time with the things you say and do. You love music, dancing-which consists mostly of spinning, animals, playing peek-a-boo, going to the beach, swimming, and going on walks to name a few things. You continue to be our good eater, but have gotten pickier, especially when it comes to veggies.

We have to beg you for cuddles, hugs and kisses all day long because you are on the go! But at night, when we put you in your crib, you’re the one who asks us for a hug and kiss, which makes us just melt! You also enjoy reading books so we try to sneak in some cuddle time with you then too.

You bring an abundance of joy into our lives and we feel very blessed to have you as our daughter. We are excited to continue to help you learn and grow during the upcoming year and can’t wait to see you as a big sister come October. We love you beautiful, sweet, smart, Elly Grace.

                                                        Love,

                                                              Mommy & Daddy

Happy 5th Anniversary! August 28, 2010

Jamie and I had our 5th wedding anniversary in July! We spoiled ourselves with a beach front hotel room for a night and a nice dinner out, just the two of us.

It’s hard to believe five years have passed since our wedding day, I just hope we’re lucky enough to have many more years as wonderful as the ones we’ve already shared together.

Some updated vows I make to Jamie:

  • be a better listener as you talk about two of your passions;  indie rock and all things sports
  • stop having you go on late night ice cream/cake runs (this one will begin in mid October)
  • try to make you feel more appreciated for all that you do for me and our family
  • maybe start watching one of your critically acclaimed shows (non-violent only) with you as long as you promise not to roll your eyes even once during Bachelor Pad

I had a great time celebrating with a dear friend as she tied the knot last month. I love being a stay at home Mom so there aren’t a lot of things I miss at this point about teaching full-time but I do miss the great friends I made and got to see each day at work.

Can’t you guys just move into my house in Wilmington so we can hang out everyday still? Elly and baby brother would be so super smart with 4 teachers in the house day in and day out. Well even smarter, obviously they are already gifted.  Baby brother moves around constantly and his hiccuping skills are advanced.  Elly expresses herself with such passion, her range of emotion is truly impressive. Love you girls and best wishes to Angela and Ryan!

Little Surfer Girl Party August 26, 2010

Some of you may know that I go a little nutso over birthdays. Jamie has definitely learned this over the years and always makes my birthday so special because he loves me…and probably because he also fears me and my crazy love of birthdays a bit. It’s not shocking that now that I’m a Mom I go a little crazy over Elly’s birthdays, well, the two that she’s had thus far.  There are only so many birthdays that I’ll get to celebrate with her (womp, womp…) so I want to make them special and planning her party has become a fun creative outlet for me.

This year our theme was ‘Little Surfer Girl’ which suits Elly perfectly since she loves the beach. We started with these adorable invites.

I was able to find some luau type decorations and made a birthday banner to match all the bright beachy colors. My Mom was nice enough to make me some table runners in a fabric that I liked. I think she may stop coming to visit a few days ahead of Elly’s parties now that she knows she will be appointed my party planning assistant who gets stuck with jobs like cutting fruit and veggies…the types of things I am more than happy to give up control on.

We ordered bbq from one of our favorite places down here and made some side dishes to go with it. I found these cute and edible surfboard cupcake toppers on Etsy, love them! Guests also enjoyed some surfboard shaped cookies and rice krispies treats shaped like fish and starfish, yum. Although by the time I finished decorating those cookies I’m not sure how tasty they were anymore, sugar overload!

We displayed some beachy framed pictures of Elly along with her scrapbook which I make through www.howfasttimeflies.com. Another sentimental touch was a birthday book by Dr. Seuss for everyone to sign and write a message in for Elly (thanks to Jessica for this idea!). We had a slide show with pics from the past year, I managed to cut it down to about 5 minutes, compared to last year’s show which lasted 10! I’m sure the party guests were very thankful for this. ‘Surfer Girl’ by the Beach Boys was one of the songs we used for the show.

The kids at the party went on a shell hunt in the backyard. I remembered how much fun Elly had hunting for eggs so I was hopeful this would be an easy activity for the little ones to enjoy and it went pretty well despite our lack of grass.

Elly now understands what a present is and stayed pretty focused on opening the plethora of gifts she received, she got spoiled by family and friends, thank you!! We were lucky to have so much family in town to help Elly celebrate turning two. She loved being surrounded by all her favorite people!

super excited about silly bandz!

Thank you to everyone who helped make celebrating Elly’s 2nd birthday special and fun! I hope all your birthdays are just as sweet as Elly’s was!

Silly Bandz August 9, 2010

For those of you who haven’t heard, Silly Bandz are all the rage. Elly proves that she is trendy but likes to put her own spin on things by wearing her Silly Bandz on her ankle and even Otis has gotten in on the fad. I wonder if the two-year-olds in Elly’s soon to be preschool will start trading bandz with each other. Maybe they’ll make the news since their learning will be so greatly impacted by such a huge distraction. When I’m interviewed about it for the Today Show I will be outraged because my daughter didn’t learn to take turns, eat snack, or sing songs due to Silly Band fever!

Blackberry Beard August 4, 2010

Elly is enjoying all the fresh fruit that summer has to offer and has discovered a love for blackberries. I am not quite sure how she managed to get this messy, but it definitely gave us a good laugh!
